The first SMS was sent from one mobile phone to another on this day in 1992.
It was sent by British engineer Neil Papworth to a colleague at Vodafone, and contained the words “Merry Christmas”.
The message was received by a phone that weighed 2 kilos – roughly the same as 12 iPhone 14s.
