Almost six years since the sod-turning ceremony, detailed design work on the long-stalled Cork Event Centre project has finally begun.

It will however be autumn next year before that design work is complete.

A humanitarian fund for businesses and sports clubs impacted by flooding in Cork last week
will open today.

Businesses and organisations which are unable to access insurance will receive €5,000 immediately
and can apply for the additional €15,000 to help with repair costs.

Cabinet Ministers will discuss proposals for emergency energy payments to all households this morning.

It's expected Minister Eamon Ryan will bring the idea to Cabinet that could see households paid 100 euro against energy bills early in the new year.

One of the country's leading think-tanks is encouraging trade unions to seek pay rises of between 2.5 and 4.5 percent next year.

The recommendation from the Nevin Institute and ICTU comes as the Department of Finance forecasts inflation of 3.5 percent over the next 12 months.
