A man has been denied bail over charges of stabbing a man in the face and body and attempted blackmail of a woman at knifepoint in Dublin.

Robert Griffin, of Mary Aikenhead House in Dublin 8, was arrested following an incident on Thursday.

A public demonstration is to be mounted this afternoon in support of Pipers Funfair in Kinsale.

The funfair, which has been operating in the town for the past 90 years, cannot return to its usual pitch at the car park on Pier Road unless a €60,000 bond is paid to the County Council.

The bond is being sought as the car park was resurfaced at a cost of €140,000 and the bond is needed to cover any costs if the surface is damaged when the fairground is erected.

Animal rights campaigners say the deaths of three horses at this week's Aintree racing festival prove their actions were justified at yesterday's Grand National.

10-year old 'Hill Sixteen' died in the National, after falling at the first fence.

Another horse, 'Dark Raven' died after racing earlier in the day, and 'Special Envoy' died on Thursday, on the first day of the festival.

The Health Minister wants the full implementation of the agreement reached with Non Consultant Hospital Doctors in December.

He's told the Irish Medical Organisation AGM in Kerry they must be able to take annual leave and avail of study leave.
