Thousands Forced To Leave Their Homes In Greece After Wildfires Burn Out Of Control
Thousands of people have been forced to leave their homes in Greece, after strong winds caused wildfires to burn out of control.
A protracted heatwave has turned forests into tinderboxes, with flames threatening populated areas – including the Greek capital, Athens.
Firefighters say they’re battling around 50 active fires and one person has died.
Georgia Trismpioti from the Red Cross says many others have been injured:
“The blaze in northwest Athens is completely out of control. Of course, we had a lot of injured people, a lot of firefighters that had to be hospitalised because of burning or because of respiratory problems.”
