Today marks one year since the death of Ashling Murphy

A number of events will take place in Co Offaly today to mark the death of Ashling Murphy.

The 23-year-old school teacher was killed this day last year while going for a run along the Grand Canal in Tullamore.
Since her death 12 months ago 11 more women have lost their lives to male violence against women including 28 year old Bruna Fonseca (FON SAY-CA) who was found dead at an apartment on Liberty Street in Cork city on New Years Day.

There’ll be anniversary mass in St Brigid’s Church in Mountbolus this evening for Ashling Murphy, while staff and pupils at Durrow National School were she taught will also remember her.

A memorial now stands were the alleged attack happened last year, Tom Finnety from Tullamore Mens Shed is one of the people behind it.

"I don't think it's ever going to be forgotten here, it's something that's been embedded in people's memories.

"The idea of the chair [in honour of Ashling] is for people to sit down and reflect, to acknowledge what went on here, to say a prayer, to sit down and have a think about life yourself, and how things can change."
