Tributes paid to former Soviet leader following his death

Tributes are being paid to Mikhail Gorbachev, the former Soviet leader who was credited for ending the Cold War without bloodshed.

He has died at the age of 91 following a long illness.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin says Gorbachev “truly changed the world” and was “one of the most significant political figures of the late twentieth century”.

The United Nations secretary-general described him as a ‘towering global leader’

While the White House says Mikhail Gorbachev dramatically reduced the potential for a third World War.
