Turkey Put Ten International Ambassadors On Notice Of Expulsion After They Called For The Release Of Jailed Businessman

Turkey has put ten international ambassadors on notice of expulsion after they called for the release of a jailed businessman.

Osman Kavala has been in prison since 2017, despite a ruling by the European Court of Human Rights calling for his immediate release two years ago.

The ambassadors said Mr Kavala’s detention has “cast a shadow over respect for democracy, the rule of law and transparency”.

The Turkish foreign ministry has called the letter “impertinent” — and six EU ambassadors along with the representatives of the US, Canada and New Zealand have now been declared “persona non grata”.
