Two people in discussions with An Post with a view to taking over Blarney Post Office
Cork TD Thomas Gould told a large gathering of locals protesting outside the Post Office this afternoon that the future of the office should be clear by Friday.
Deputy Gould is calling on An Post to take over the running of the Post Office in the village if no deal is agreed with the interested parties, something he says they have done with around 40 Post Offices around the country.
An Post have advertised the tender for the business three times and say they are committed to offering postal services in Blarney.
Speaking to RedFM News at today’s protest, local resident Tara outlines the importance of the Post Office for the local community:
“It’s going to be an absolutely massive loss all together, it’s going to be a massive loss to the economy of Blarney village. People who collect their payments here in the Post Office are more likely to spend their money in the village, if they have to go to Blackpool, all of that’s going to stop. It’s going to be a massive massive, massive loss to Blarney. There’s a lot of elderly people in Blarney. This is like their main social interaction of the week as well. It’s just going to have a detrimental effect on everybody here.”
