UK: Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak clash on recession prevention

In the UK, the Business Secretary says Rishi Sunak’s plans to deal with a recession by putting up taxes “doesn’t make any sense”.

Last night, the two Tory leadership candidates clashed over how best to avoid it happening.

Liz Truss says tax cuts can avert it, but the ex-chancellor says that will cause misery for millions.

Kwasi Kwarteng, who backs the foreign secretary, says Rishi Sunak’s way is “adding insult to injury”:

“To face a world where your interest rates are going up, and then you’re putting taxes up on top of that is not helping growth. I mean, that’s obvious. I have never believed that the way to deal with a recession to put up taxes on people, I think is perverse.”
