Warning that free schoolbooks scheme is insufficiently funded

Insufficient funding has been allocated to provide free schoolbooks to primary school students next year, despite government promises.

That’s the view of publishers and booksellers who think there was a lack of detail to deliver the plans, as reported by The Irish Times.

It was announced in the budget by the Minister for Education that €47m would be set aside to provide free school books to all 540,000 primary pupils.

Some estimate that it amounts to funding of between €80-90, but the Irish League of Credit Unions estimates the average cost of books per pupil is €110 euro.
