An urgent meeting is being sought with the Education Minister after a report produced into the experience of school going travellers in North Cork found they are facing barriers to education
The Travellers of North Cork report, undertaken by Dr Patricia McGrath at Adult Continuing Education at UCC found that some schools are still segregating children into Traveller-only classrooms,
The study also found that early school leaving is encouraged with some teachers actively encouraging children to leave school once they hit the legal age of 16
Senator Eileen Flynn says she is shocked but not surprised by the findings of the report
Speaking to RedFM News Senator Flynn says traveller children should have equality of opportunity and she is seeking an apology from Education Minister Norma Foley
"These children and parents should get an apology straightaway from the Minister for Education, putting travelers children into the one room, probably more than likely given them color and then to do is absolutely scandalous. I'd like what is the Minister what they're going to do about this now, is there going to be a further investigation through all schools because I actually know that this is not just happening in Cork, this is happening and up and down the country."
