Residents living near University College Cork say they are "hopeful" following a meeting with the president of the University on Thursday.
The meeting came after locals say they witnessed unprecedented antisocial behaviour and criminal damage by students who were returning for the new Semester last Sunday.
The Residents Association welcomed, what they called " the strong words" of UCC President, John O'Halloran, that he will not be found wanting in sanctioning students who breach the university's Code of Behaviour.
Sanctions could include fines of up to €5,000, suspensions and expulsions.
The Chairperson of the Magazine Road and Surrounding Areas Residents Association, Catherine Clancy told RedFM News that locals feel reassured by the President's word:
"We are very much hopeful after the meeting that took place last Thursday evening with the president of UCC John O'Halloran. We are taking the strong words that he used, that be no doubt that he will use all the tools available to deal with students who break the Code of Behaviour. And while none of us want to see students expelled, that that expulsion is in there matters to us as residents because while we recognise that fair process must take place, we feel reassured by the President's word that there will be consequences for the breaches of the code of behaviour."
