Secondary school teachers are warning the crisis in recruitment and retention will deteriorate if wages aren’t increased.

The Association of Secondary Teachers in Ireland is calling for pay to rise in line with inflation.

81% of principals and deputy principals surveyed by the ASTI and Red C said they were forced to employ at least one unqualified teacher this school year.

General Secretary of the ASTI, Kieran Christie says there are solutions available to the Education Minister.

"If we want to attract teachers back to Ireland from Dubai or Canada or wherever in September, you don't offer them to come back to part time employment for three years before they have any prospect of getting a full time job.

"You go back to the old system that was in place 20, 25 years ago where subject to probation you got a job and once you had done your probationary period you were permanent."
