Smoking and vaping in many outdoor settings could soon be banned, if recommendations by the EU come into law.
It would mean that smoking would be prohibited in places like playgrounds, bus stops and outdoor areas in restaurants, in a bid to cut down on second-hand smoke exposure.
Professor Luke Clancy, Director General of Tobacco Free Research Institute Ireland, says campaigners have been calling for this for years:
"Many people have been advocating for this extension because they have a policy for the whole EU they aim to be to back free by 2040, and this is a move in that direction, and an encouragement to the member states to extend their smoke free laws."
