Cork City have confirmed that centre-back Cathal Heffernan is making a permanent switch to Serie A champions - AC Milan.

The 17-year-old made 16 appearances with the club's under-18 side after joining on loan in January.

Heffernan made his first team debut in the final game of the 2021season for Cork City where he joined from Ringmahon Rangers in 2019.

The League of Ireland club haven't revealed any contract or financial details in relation to the transfer.i.

Speaking to RedFM Sport, Heffernan says he's thoroughly enjoyed his experience with Milan.

"It's been brilliant, words can't describe how I feel about it.

"It just suited me to the ground. The culture, the weather, everything. Since I got over there I've loved every second of it, I don't take any days for granted, I'm just working hard and I'm just getting better every day.

"The football in Ireland and England is a lot more fast paced, in Italy it's a lot more tactical. The way the Italians play, they have their own style and you just have to adapt to that, simple as."

Cork City’s Head of Academy, Liam Kearney, said: “Cathal has clearly done well whilst on loan and is now getting the opportunity to sign permanently.

"That he is getting this opportunity is a testament to his own hard work and dedication, as well as the work put in by his coaches at Ringmahon Rangers and here at our academy.

"We are very pleased for him and we wish him the very best of luck in his future career.”
