John Egan looks likely to miss next month's World Cup qualifiers after picking up a serious injury while playing for Sheffield United against West Ham United last night.
The Corkman was stretchered off late on during the Blades' 3-0 defeat, with his manager Chris Wilder saying afterwards that the injury doesn't look good.
"It didn't look too good," said Wilder after the game.
“He's on crutches now and that caps a miserable night for us.
"He’s a tough Irish boy so for him to stick his hand up wasn’t a good sign."
The news will come as a blow for Ireland manager Stephen Kenny who is planning for next month's World Cup Qualifiers against Serbia and Luxembourg, and the friendly with Qatar, with Egan looking like he'll miss all three games.
Sheffield United tweeted last night "John Egan appears to have sustained a serious foot/leg injury. Get well soon, John."
