Trevor Hemmings, the owner of Preston North End, has passed away at the age of 86.
Hemmings and his company Grovemoor Limited had the option to purchase Cork City FC after supporters voted in favour of that motion.
Hemmings and Grovemoor helped the club to obtain a licence for the 2021 season.
Hemmings saved Preston from a winding up order in 2010, purchasing a controlling stake in the club.
The billionaire was also heavily involved in horse racing, owning three Grand National winners in Hedgehunter, Ballabrigs and Many Clouds.
Hemmings is survived by his wife Eve and their four children.
Preston confirmed the news in a brief statement last night, saying:
"Preston North End Football Club can sadly confirm the devastating news that its owner Trevor Hemmings CVO has passed away this evening 11th October 2021.
A further statement will be made in the coming days but in the meantime his family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult time."
In a statement on social media, Cork City said:
"Everyone at Cork City FC would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the Hemmings family and everyone at Preston North End following the passing of Mr Trevor Hemmings.
"Mr Hemmings, who has a long history with our city and county through his business dealings has always been a big supporter of our football club. He was there for our club when we needed him most, and for that everyone connected to Cork City FC will be eternally grateful.
"The Hemmings family have asked for privacy at this time and we would ask our supporters and those with an interest in our club to respect these wishes."
