A specialist surgeon in Cork is warning about the extreme dangers of weight loss surgery abroad and has outlined serious problems with how they are carried out

Dr Colm O’Boyle was speaking following a sitting of Cork City Coroners Court which heard the cases of two women who died after travelling to Turkey for weight loss surgery.

53-year-old Pamela Canty from Commons Road in the City died days after returning home following a gastric bypass and 48-year-old Estelita Hamelin from Fermoy died while undergoing a liposuction and tummy tuck procedure.

Dr O’Boyle told RedFM News about what he is hearing firsthand about weight loss surgery abroad:

"A mother and daughter told me that the mother went abroad with her daughter. The daughter proved to have an unusual medical condition and the surgeon said she couldn't go ahead with surgery but the surgeon turned around and offer the mother surgery and the mother hadn't citizen solicited the surgery at all. It's rather crazy behaviour"
