Sport Ireland says it hopes the country's success at the Olympics will lead to more young people getting involved in sport.
Ireland won a total of four medals - including two golds by Kellie Harrington in boxing and Fintan McCarthy and Paul O'Donovan in rowing.
It meant a 39th place finish in the medal table - the highest since the 1996 Games.
Sport Ireland CEO John Treacy hopes Kellie Harrington's win yesterday will help inspire the next generation.
"We would love to see obviously more children getting involved, getting a greater base and then you'd have more talent coming through in a few years time.
"Young boys and girls joining boxing clubs - we strongly encourage that."
