Cork rowers the first Irish athletes in action at the Olympics

The first of the Irish athletes are in action tonight at the games in Tokyo.
Cork's Sanita Puspure goes in the heats of the women's single sculls at 1.40am Irish time.
Cork's Ronan Byrne Philip Doyle from Belfast go in the heats of the men's double sculls an hour later.

Meanwhile Irish swimmer Danielle Hill has been given the all clear to represent Ireland at the Olympics.

The Antrim native's participation had been in doubt after she tested positive for COVID-19 in recent weeks.

Hill, who will compete in the freestyle and backstroke, has linked up with the rest of the team in Tokyo.

The director of the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics has been fired after being accused of making a joke about the Holocaust in the nineties.Kentaro Kobayashi is thought to have made the comment in a comedy show in 1998.

Earlier this week, a composer whose music is expected to be used in the event was forced to resign over allegations of bullying.

There are 12 new cases of Covid-19 among people involved in the Tokyo 2020 Games bringing the total to 91.

That includes two athletes in the Olympic village - Dutch skateboarder Candy Jacobs and Czech table tennis player Pavel Širucek who both tested positive yesterday.

Chilean Taekwondo athlete Fernanda Aguirre has left the village after being forced to withdraw from the Games yesterday.
