Tánaiste Leo Varadkar has told a group of fourth class pupils that trick or treating can go ahead, once they wash their hands and social distance.

The pupils wrote to the Tánaiste with their query about Halloween, and received a note in return.

The Tánaiste was asked if he would be dressing up for Halloween, and he told them he hasn't decided on a costume yet as things have been very busy lately.

The letter has been shared on Twitter by their teacher.

In the letter the Tanaiste says, regarding trick 0r treating, that:

"What will be really important for Halloween is that you keep safe. So, keep washing those hands, keep standing a little bit back from one another. If you do those things then I think you will be able to go trick or treating!"

The fourth class Teacher said the class were delighted to receive post addressed to them from Merrion Street:

"Thank you Leo Varadkar for taking the time out to respond to the very legitimate queries regarding Halloween from my amazing superstars in 4th Class!!! They were DELIGHTED to receive post addressed to them from Merrion Street!!! #HappyHalloween"

The Tanaiste also thanked the children for sending him sweets, which he said he will enjoy with a cup of tea.
