Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney will appear before an Oireachtas committee at 10am to answer questions about the controversial, failed appointment of Katherine Zappone as a UN special envoy.

It's expected Minister Coveney will be asked to clarify why he deleted text messages and to explain the reasoning behind the appointment when he appears.

The Department of Foreign Affairs published over 150 documents including WhatsApp messages between Minister Coveney and Katherine Zappone yesterday evening.

Speaking to RedFM News, Taoiseach Micheál Martin says transparency is important to the government.

"I think it's important that we as a government learn lessons from this also.

"I can give my view in terms of the government perspective on it we are going to learn lessons from it and as I've said make certain changes as to how we do this into the future.

"I do believe we need a sense of perspective in relation to it."
