The Taoiseach says VMware has assured the Government that it will seek to avoid the level of proposed redundancies where possible.

The proposed 360 redundancies at the Ballincollig based plant was raised in the Dail last evening.

Socialist Party TD Mick Barry described the potential for 360 jobs to go at the firm as a devastating blow to the town.

The company has been in Cork since 2005 and was recently acquired by global tech giant Broadcom.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said trhe new owners have begun a consultation process with staff:

"The IDA will work with the local leadership team to understand the skills profile of the affected employees and to match that with existing or target client skill requirements."
