The Taoiseach is traveling to Belfast this morning to meet political party leaders from across Northern Ireland.

It's part of a diplomatic offensive ahead of the deadline to form a Government in the North.

Both the Taoiseach and Tánaiste will be heading up the M1 this morning as part of what the Government is describing as its commitment to resolving issues around the Northern Ireland Protocol and seeing the Stormont Executive re-established.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar will meet the leaders of the Northern Irish political parties, a day after Sinn Féin and the SDLP refused to attend similar talks with the British Foreign Minister James Cleverly.

It was after Mary Lou McDonald wasn't allowed into the meetings as she isn't elected in Northern Ireland.

McDonald and Michelle O'Neill WILL meet with Leo Varadkar today, along with Jeffrey Donaldson of the DUP and other Northern Irish parties.

Meanwhile Tánaiste and Foreign Affairs Minister Micheál Martin will meet the Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Heaton Harris at Hillsborough

The Northern Ireland Protocol and the resumption of the power sharing Government are top of the agenda, ahead of the January 17th deadline for fresh Stormont elections.
