After a second amber alert from the national electricity grid operator yesterday, a TD is calling for a stop to planned connections for data centres.
Eirgrid says Ireland's electricity system is experiencing "tight margins", due to low wind, limited electricity imports, and forced outages at a number of generators.
The second alert ceased last night, but Eirgrid is continuing to monitor the situation.
People Before Profit TD, Paul Murphy, says 30 percent of Irish electricity will be used up by data centres by 2030.
"It's a crisis situation that we currently face where two days in a row in the summer we're having amber alerts, which means we're coming close to blackouts.
"It means we're on track for blackouts in the winter.
"A core reason for that is the amount of electricity that is being gobbled up by data centres. At the moment, 14% of our total electricity consumed is consumed by the data centres."
