Teaching unions say their members should get a Covid-19 bonus payment, due to their "extraordinary efforts" during the pandemic.

The ASTI, INTO and TUI have issued a joint statement calling for inclusion in any pandemic rewards for frontline workers.

They say their efforts allowed schools to continue to prioritise teaching and learning, while meeting children and young people’s needs.

But Jennifer Horgan, a secondary school teacher, doesn't think teachers on the ground are demanding the rewards.

"Speaking for myself here and any teacher I know, both in person and online - I don't think we're interested in any type of bonus or compensation.

"I think most are really annoyed to see that headline, that teachers are demanding this bonus.

"Far more teachers are concerned about the lack of funding in the education system."
