A UCC feasibility study on such a facility for the city is due to be delivered by the end of the month
The idea has been examined before however issues around funding for a suitable site and programme as well as public consultation and staffing have led to long delays
Speaking to RedFM News David Lane of the HSE says it's important that people understand the benefits the facility would bring
"For the most part when services like these are set up it reduces a lot of the challenges that local communities face in terms of drug litter, public injecting and the nuisance factor that local communities see in terms of drug use across the city. The benefits of services like these being developed far outweigh the challenges that might emerge"
