The Government's Covid Inquiry is under fire as Cabinet yesterday agreed to proceed with an "evaluation", rather than an “inquiry”.
It means the evaluation’s chairperson and panel will not have the power to compel documents or witnesses.
People who lost loved ones in nursing homes are deeply disappointed with the news as they say they have a lot of unanswered questions in the wake of their relatives deaths
Pat Coyle, who lost his wife Veronica in CareChoice Ballynoe Nursing Home in February 2021, told RedFM News that the evaluation is not acceptable to the families left behind
"We need a statutory public inquiry into what happened during COVID. So much needs to be explained, and we need learning. We need to be able to move forward in the safe knowledge that people are going to be protected. We need a care partner put in place. But at the moment, what the government want to put in place is not acceptable to the families. It doesn't answer anything"
