The Irish Road Haulage Association has described as "optimistic" An Post's assertion that parcels stuck in Holyhead will be delivered by Christmas

500,000 parcels were delayed because of damage caused to port infrastructure in Holyhead by Storm Darragh however thousands of these parcels were rerouted through other ports overnight

An Post says the backlog has now been reduced to 150,000 packages, however the IRHA says their members are reporting that 60% of the freight that should have travelled last week hasn't moved yet

Speaking on the Neil Prendeville Show IRHA President Ger Hyland says the pressure for space on ferries is at an all time high and will only deepen next week as people start travelling home for Christmas

"Since last weekend, every ferry port in the UK and every ferry port in Ireland is absolutely at 100% capacity. There isn't room for a match coming across on any of these ferries at the present time. And don't forget that come next week, we're going to be vying for space on ferries with tourists"
