A series of investigations are underway following the death of a young Irish soldier serving with the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, a second soldier was seriously wounded.

Private Seán Rooney, who was stationed in Dundalk, died after two armoured vehicles carrying members of 121st Infantry Battalion came under fire near Sidon, around 30 miles south of Beirut.

The attack on the Irish convoy has also left 22-year-old Private Shane Kearney from Killeagh in Cork in a serious condition.

Temperatures reached -8 degrees in North Cork last night.

That's according to Met Eireann as the county was under a status orange weather warning.

Meteorologists said conditions there will be icy road surfaces this morning and pockets of freezing fog which will lead to hazardous driving conditions.

A yellow warning for ice will be in effect from Midday today until midday tomorrow, as showers gradually track southeast over the country, with rain, sleet and possibly snow expected.

Some publicans in rural areas across Cork are considering shutting their doors for a fortnight in January as they are struggling with rising costs.

The Vintners Federation of Ireland says hundreds of rural pubs are facing a dire situation this winter as the grapple with sky high energy prices.

The VFI has already appealed for a one-off grant payment to be made to support rural pubs currently excluded from the Government's energy scheme.

Twitter has suspended the accounts of several journalists who have been covering the social media site and its new owner Elon Musk.

Reporters from the New York Times, Washington Post and CNN are among those subject to the ban, without an explanation.

The billionaire recently took down an account which tracked the flights of his private jet, using publicly available data, because he says it violated his privacy.
