Actor Michael K Williams has passed away at the age of 54.

Best known for his role as Omar Little in the crime-drama The Wire, his death was confirmed this morning by a representative for the actor through the entertainment publisher, The Hollywood Reporter.

The statement announcing the sad news said, "It is with deep sorrow that the family announces the passing of Emmy nominated actor Michael Kenneth Williams," said the statement.

"They ask for your privacy while grieving this unsurmountable loss."

Williams was reportedly found dead in his New York home on Monday afternoon after a call to emergency services.

The New York Police Department have said that his death is an "ongoing investigation" and the New York medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

Williams had previously appeared on TV on the likes of The Sopranos, CSI: NY, Law & Order and Alias and his film credits include 12 Years A Slave, Assassin's Creed, and The Road.

The actor was also nominated for an Emmy for his part in When They See Us, Vice, The Night Of and Bessie.

Earlier this year Williams received another Emmy nomination for his role in horror-drama series Lovecraft Country with the awards due to take place later this month.

David Simon, the creator of The Wire, tweeted a dedication to the film & tv star after hearing the news of his death saying, "Too gutted right now to say all that ought to be said. Michael was a fine man and a rare talent and on our journey together he always deserved the best words. And today those words won't come."

US TV network HBO also expressed their sadness at the news saying, "We are devastated to learn of the passing of Michael Kenneth Williams, a member of the HBO family for more than 20 years.

"While the world is aware of his immense talents as an artist, we knew Michael as a dear friend who was beloved by all who had the privilege to work with him. We send our deepest condolences to his family for this immeasurable loss."
