Minister Simon Coveney survived a confidence motion in the Dáil last night, however the coalition is down a member.

TD Marc MacSharry resigned the Fianna Fáil whip and voted against the Government.

But the support of a number of Independent TDs saw Minister Coveney win the motion 92 votes to 59.

The local economy in Cork is reeling from the news that Ireland will not be hosting the America's Cup.

The government had been due to make a decision on the race this week but asked organisers for more time to to allow them to carry out a detailed cost benefit analysis.

It's reported ministers want to take an extra six months to consider the bid, which it's estimated will cost around €150 million.

The number of Covid-19 patients in hospital has dropped by 18% in the past two weeks.

274 were receiving treatment in hospitals last night, down from 335 at the end of August.

There has also been a 25% decrease in the country's five day moving average over the same period, from 1,633 to 1,212.

Two men remain in custody in Cork following the seizure of €42,500 worth of cannabis.

€35,000 worth of the drug was discovered at a checkpoint on the Youghal Road in Midleton yesterday afternoon.

It was part of an operation targeting the delivery of illegal drugs into the town via public transport.

Two men in their 30s were arrested, and a further €7,500 of cannabis was later found during a follow up search in Waterford.
