National mental health charity Turn2Me has released a list of ten strategies to combat the 'January Blues.' The charity points to three main triggers for these blues: 'Post-Holiday Letdown', Seasonal Affective Disorder, and Financial Stress.
The charity described the Post-Holiday Letdown as the time after the excitement and busyness of the holiday season, where many people experience a sense of letdown or sadness once the festivities are over. It says returning to work or daily routines after the holidays can lead to a feeling of emptiness or disappointment, especially if expectations for the holidays were high.
Seasonal Affective Disorder: This type of depression typically occurs during the autumn and winter months. It says reduced exposure to sunlight during shorter days can disrupt the body's internal clock and lead to changes in serotonin and melatonin levels, affecting mood and causing depressive symptoms.
Financial Stress: The holiday season often involves increased spending on gifts, travel, and social activities. In January, many people face financial strain due to holiday expenses, leading to stress and anxiety about managing debts or tightening budgets.
Turn2Me’s ten tips to help people overcome the January Blues:
1. Stay Active: Engage in enjoyable physical activities to release endorphins and boost mood.
2. Get Out in Nature: Benefit your mental health by spending time outdoors, whether it's forest walks, hiking, or gardening.
3. Practice Self-Care: Prioritize sleep, nutrition, and relaxation techniques like meditation.
4. Socialise: Combat feelings of isolation by planning activities with friends, family, or attending social events.
5. Explore New Hobbies: Use the start of the year as an opportunity to learn something new for a sense of accomplishment.
6. Travel: Plan a trip, whether abroad or a more affordable staycation, to have something to look forward to.
7. Make Time for Fun: Incorporate enjoyable activities into your routine to lift your spirits.
8. Practice Gratitude: Focus on the positives by keeping a gratitude journal and shifting your perspective towards positivity.
9. Avoid Toxic People: Reduce time spent with 'energy vampires' who drain your energy with negative behaviour.
10. Seek Professional Help if Needed: If experiencing anxiety or depression, don't hesitate to seek support from a mental health professional.
