UCC Students’ Union says the price of rent has jumped by over 50% in 8 years.

The average price for a single room in the city is now €592 per month which is a 51% increase on 2017 figures.

The union says many students are now sacrificing food or healthcare to pay for their accommodation.

Speaking to RedFM News Lucressia Luna Smee from UCC Students’ Union says some students have had to give up their studies because of high accommodation costs:

"Since 2017, we've seen a 52 percent increase in the price of rent and a sky rocket post-covid, so students are getting priced out of the opportunity to move to city that they are studying in so they can't continue their studies, some can't even start their studies."
