An 81 year old man was counting over 5,500 euro on to his kitchen table, which he had put away to pay for his funeral, when 31-year old Jason Coffey wandered into his home.
Coffey noticed an unlocked door and entered the house on the morning of the 1st July 2020.
Although the pair had not previously met, he told the elderly man that he was owed money for gutter work.
Coffey, who was originally from Abbeyfeale in Limerick, then picked up all the money on the table, except for €150 and left.
He was subsequently tracked down by CCTV and arrested for the offence
Judge Helen Boyle said that, in a letter of apology to the victim, Jason Coffey had stressed that he was remorseful for his actions.
