80% of all private rental accommodation inspections in Cork City, since October, were done by a private contractor
That's according to today's Echo which is reporting that Cork City Council employed an outside contractor to work with its Private Rental Inspection Unit.
The Government has set the Council a target of inspecting 25% of private rental properties.
But, the paper says that in 2021, they achieved an inspection rate of just over 2%, and that the assistance of an external provider was necessary to meet the demands on the PRIU.
Of the private properties inspected, 87% did not meet minimum standards.
Reasons for failing included inadequate ventilation, lack of smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, evacuation plans, or window restrictors.
