Government excise reliefs on motor fuel are on the verge of being wiped out, according to the AA.
Prices for premium diesel have gone above 2 euro once again, despite cuts in excise duty.
Gardaí say the rising prices of fuel could lead to an increased level of theft into the summer.
Head of Communications at the AA, Paddy Comyn, says motorists should be prepared:
"It would appear that prices are creeping up. Certainly from what we're seeing, through our surveys, that the prices across the country are creeping up towards that €2 mark, particularly for diesel. Petrol prices remain reasonably stable, but diesel prices are certainly creeping up and we're definitely seeing some premium products over the €2 mark".
