Councillors were briefed on the allocation for the county by Director of Services, Roads and Transportation Padraig Barrett at today’s council meeting.
The budget includes €78.6 million for national primary roads, €6.4 million for secondary routes and €1.29 million for maintenance, however councillors were told the Council can apply for more money for the upkeep of roads as it’s needed.
The funding also includes €5.15 million for greenways, something that was criticised by Cllr Deirdre O’Brien who said while she welcomes greenways, they should not come at the expense of improving national routes and Cllr Kevin Murphy who said while welcome, the amount of funding being made available for greenways is “over the top”.
€4.5 Million was granted for the Midleton to Youghal greenway while there is also funding for greenways in Charleville, Mallow, Kinsale and Schull.
Priorities for 2022 include funding for planning and design of the M20 Cork to Limerick Motorway and the N28 Cork to Ringaskiddy road. Works on the N25 between Carrigtwohill and Midleton received no funding this year.
Overall, the allocation for the county is a 9% increase on last years funding.
