Management say the high volume of presentations to the hospitals Acute Medical Assessment Unit and increased infection control measures have forced the decision.
The move does not affect St Joseph's Residential Unit which is located on the hospital grounds.
The HSE says visiting will only be allowed in exceptional circumstances such as end of life patients and critically ill patients.
People are also being asked to explore all available options before presenting at the hospital.
