The listening service is operated by the ISPCC and staffed by volunteers and deals with issues such as loneliness, mental and physical abuse and drug and alcohol abuse in the home.
Calls to Childline typically increase around Christmas time, and this year volunteers will be working every day in the run up to Christmas including Christmas Day itself.
Megan Sarl from Cork has been volunteering with Childline for the past 9 years and will be taking calls on Christmas Day.
She told RedFM News that some children dread this time of year:
"Christmas isn't the same for every child. You know every child that's excited about Christmas, there's a child that isn't excited when Christmas. Christmas isn't always just full of joy and happiness for a lot of families and there's a lot of kids feel really dread it and are not looking forward to it. So at the moment we have a lot of calls in particular for children who are worried about Christmas Day, worried about what will happen, what's happened in the past, and they're not looking forward to it."
