A Cork TD is calling on the government to stop imposing VAT on defibrillators.
Cork North-Central TD , Colm Burke was speaking after the publication of the Department of Finance Tax Strategy Group Papers today.
The Papers include an option to extend the zero rate of VAT on medical equipment to defibrillators.
At present, defibrillators are taxed at the standard rate of 23% VAT.
Speaking to RedFM News, Deputy Burke says voluntary community groups, who buy the AEDs shouldn't have to raise extra money just to pay the VAT:
"VAT on defibrillators must be removed in the next budget. These are used out in the community to save lives. There should not be VAT on these items. The vast majority of the funding raised for the purchase of these defibrillators is raised at local level by volunteer organisations. They should not be penalised with a tax and have to pay VAT".
