The family of a black man shot dead by gardaí in west Dublin during a mental health episode last year say he should still be alive.

An anniversary vigil for George Nkencho was held last night in Blanchardstown.

The Nkencho family says he was suffering from a mental health episode, and could have been calmed down.

They say the state response to the first death of a black man at the hands of gardaí will "set the tone" for future relations with minority groups.

Israel Ibano told last night's vigil that he misses his friend:

"Your death has opened the eyes and mouths and ears of people in Ireland and around the world to the unnecessary and avoidable killing. I miss you young G: I miss our church days, I miss our teenage days,; and our days as young adults, our ONG Stars days, our days in the studio, our days in the soccer, our heart flow days and our Hell-And-Back days."
