The Traveller Visibility Group says a health survey conducted by Trinity College highlights how poorly travellers fare in terms of their physical health compared to the general population
The study found that conditions such as asthma, bronchitis and tuberculosis are up to three times more prevalent in the Traveller Community than the general Irish population
TVG says travellers’ housing needs in Cork are not being met and in some cases are being ignored by local authorities
Speaking to RedFM News Breda O’Donoghue of TVG says she hopes this report acts as a catalyst for change
"Report after report has been done over the years we have some very good recommendations that have come out of those reports. What we don't have is anyone implementing those recommendations and until we do have that it is going to be very difficult and unfortunately things are only going to get worse for travellers. If we have the right people saying the right things and no-one is listening, unfortunately that is going to have a knock on affect on the community"
