One hundred and fifty five people lost their lives on Irish roads this year, including 16 in Cork according to the Gardaí.
They report drivers accounted for nearly 40% of all casualties.
Transport consultant Conor Faughnan says an increase in cases of drink driving is a contributing factor.
He warns driving the morning after a night out can be dangerous:
"So if you go out on a big one, and that following morning, if you're in the car, if you have that hungover feeling, you can be certain that you're above the drink drive limit. And one thing that Gardaí do more at Christmas than other times of the year is they do do morning checkpoints".
