The Republic of Ireland kick off their 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign tonight.

The Boys in Green are in Belgrade to face Serbia in their opening tie.

The Ireland squad has been decimated by injuries, with Cork's Caoimhín Kelleher, Conor Hourihane, Kevin Long, John Egan and Adam Idah among those missing out, while Kieran Travers makes his first competitive start in goal due to the absences of Kelleher and Darren Randolph.

Kenny has yet to win as Ireland boss since taking over from Mick McCarthy last year, while they've scored just once in 8 games. The former Dundalk boss knows they're going to have to work hard to break that run tonight.

"It's something that we'll address soon, and we'll address quickly. We need to address it quickly.

" We've hit the post quite a lot, hit the bar, we just need to take our chances when they come. It's not that we haven't created chances in the game.

"Serbia will make it difficult for us to create chances, they're a very formidable team. We're going to have to work hard to create chances against them away from home, but we believe we can do that."

Ireland captain Seamus Coleman says they'll have to patient tonight against a Serbian side that will have a lot of the ball.

"It's hard to be on the front foot for 90 minutes in any game. I think Man City are the only team that can do that.

"We want to be confident, we want to play football the right way, we want to create chances, but I'm sure there'll be periods of the game where they'll have the ball and we'll try to stay compact, that's just how football works.

"We're going into it with confidence, we're going into it with a game plan. Let's hope we can get something out of it - I believe we can."

Kick off at the Red Star Stadium tonight is at 7.45 - at the same time in Group A Portugal host Azerbijan.

Meanwhile Wales take on number one ranked side Belgium in their opening World Cup qualifier this evening without manager Ryan Giggs.

The former Manchester United winger is missing for a second international break following his arrest for an alleged assault, which he denies.

Assistant Robert Page steps up again to lead the team - and says Giggs remains involved in planning for the match.
