In a statement to RedFM News in the last hour, representatives of the Irish-American dancing star confirmed he is being treated for an aggressive form of cancer.
His team say is in the care of an excellent team of doctors and that no further comment will be made at this time.
The statement went on to ask for people's prayers and well wishes.
A native of Chicago, Flatley first burst onto the scene as part of Riverdance in the mid-1990s and later toured the world with his Lord of the Dance production.
He bought Castlehyde in Fermoy 2001 and completely renovated the vast estate. He settled in the town and married Niamh O'Brien at St. Patrick's Church, Fermoy in October 2006. The couple have one son who was born the following year.
Injury forced him to retire from dancing in 2016.
His self financed and directed spy movie Blackbird was released in September last year.
