An inquiry into the death of a woman in Cork last week has been upgraded to a murder investigation.

The body of 31 year old Paula Canty was discovered in Mallow on Friday.

The investigation was upgraded to murder following a post-mortem examination carried out by the Assistant State Pathologist.

The mother-of-two was found dead at a residential property on Bridewell Lane.

It's understood she suffered stab wounds.

A senior investigating officer is leading the investigation from the incident room at Mallow Garda Station, and a family liaison officer is supporting Paula's family.

Gardaí are also appealing for witnesses and are seeking camera footage from those who were near Bridewell Lane between 9pm on Thursday and 10am on Friday.
