Students, parents and teachers organised a protest today against the closure of Saint Vincent's Girls Secondary School on Saint Mary's Road.
They were campaigning against the planned amalgamation of their school and the North Presentation Boys Secondary School next September.
The new co-educational secondary school will be situated on the North Presentation’s grounds.
Last week, the Student Council at Saint Vincent's Girls Secondary School's issued a statement in which they said they were "heartbroken" by they decision that left them 'blindsided'.
The students also said they felt disrespected because, they claim, single-sex schools on the southside are being financially supported, but single-sex schools on the northside are being forced into a co-educational system of which they do not want to be part.
Last night, St Vincent’s Girls Secondary School won the Excellence in Education award and a cheque for €5,000 - in the TechLeaders22 competition in the Rochestown Park Hotel.
