A review of speed limits and a rise in penalty points are among some of the measures being examined by the Road Safety Authority in an effort to tackle rising road deaths
Nationally the death toll is up 45% on the same period in 2019 with 10 people losing their lives on Cork roads so far this year
The RSA says these road fatalities are all preventable deaths and say it's incumbent on motorists to take collective responsibility to reverse the rising trend
Chairwoman of the RSA Liz O'Donnell told RedFM News that they are in favour of tougher penalties to help reduce fatalities
"We support tougher penalties. The Minister last year, increased fines on the various serious misbehaviour on the road, and they haven't been increased since 2002. So, we also believe that penalty points need to be reviewed. We want the speed limits reviewed and that is before Cabinet, and I think that is really important that we reduce the speeds on rural roads in particular, where many fatalities. indeed, the majority of fatalities are happening"
