The Taoiseach says there's a challenging number of months ahead with the cost of living.

Micheál Martin says he wants to make childcare affordable for working families in October's Budget.

He told his parliamentary party last night the government will also consider tax changes to help workers, and reduce healthcare costs.

He ruled taking immediate measures to match inflation - and UCC economics lecturer, Seamus Coffey, says that's the right approach.

"Much of the source of the current high rate of inflation is due to external factors, whether that is energy prices or food prices, which are sed globally, and they shouldn't be the direct concern of policy because they can't be influenced.

"It is correct to focus on domestic issues like childcare and housing, which probably should be the focus of policy regardless of the level of inflation."
